Aerial Lift Equipment Safety Guidelines

  1. Maintain a safe distance from overhead electrical lines and other conductors:
    • < 50 KV – 10 feet
    • 50 – 199 KV- 15 feet
    • 200 – 349 KV- 20 feet
    • 350 – 499 KV- 25 feet
    • 500 –749 KV – 35 feet
    • 750 – 1000 KV – 45 feet
  2. Check to ensure that the ground surfaces are flat, dry, and free from slippery materials and obstructions.
  3. The working area is free from all overhead obstructions. If obstructions do exist, the operator must be made aware.
  4. Operators should wear a hard hat.
  5. A clear work zone should be set up around the lift to steer pedestrians and vehicles away.
  6. If operating outdoors, do not operate in inclement weather, including wind.
  7. Be aware that combustion engines should not be operated in an enclosed space. The work area must remain free from flammable or explosive vapors, dust, and fibers.
  8. Be sure to use the lift consistent only with the machine load ratings.
